For the past thirty years, Matthew had conducted research on the use of X-Rays. Now, skin cancer riddled his tortured body. He had lost his nose, his left hand, two fingers on his right hand, and part of his jaw. He was left blind and was slowly deteriorating. The pain was unrelenting. Consultation with physicians, clergy, lawyers, therapists, family, and others to ensure such a serious and irreversible decision will be made only after sufficient time has passed and every alternative thoroughly weighed. Obligations to others and their needs should be taken into account. The state has an interest in protecting life. But, in the end, individuals should be given wide latitude in deciding when life has become an unendurable hardship.
